Fruit & vegetables
Some early crops should be ready for the kitchen during July. Early potatoes should be big enough to start digging and although small, beetroot will provide a very tasty treat for summer salads. Broad beans, early peas and French beans should also be ready for picking.

To keep broad beans clean pick out the top of the plant to deter blackfly. If your actions are not sufficient and blackfly take hold, spray the plants with a product with a 0-day harvest interval. BugClear or BugClear Gun!, for example can be safely used on listed food crops right up to the day of harvest.

Water runner beans if the soil is dry to encourage fast growth. A feed every week over the leaves and around the roots with Miracle-Gro Water Soluble Plant Food will encourage more flowering and a steady set of beans.

Getting children involved in growing fruit and vegetables is a sure way to inspire their curiosity and a great way of getting them to try new tastes. If you have no garden space for a veg plot then you still can grow carrots or strawberries in pots. Choose a sweet carrot variety such as Thompson & Morgan 'Sugarsnax' and get the children to sow the seed in large pots at least 25cm (10in) deep filled with Levington Multi-Purpose Compost. In a couple of weeks the seedlings will be through and will need to be watered regularly. A month after germination, start to feed with Miracle-Gro Plant Food with applications every couple of weeks. Sweet, healthy carrots should be ready for pulling in about 10 weeks to delight the youngsters either eaten raw or lightly steamed for maximum flavour.Timely tip

Don't worry if your apple or pear tree has dropped a large quantity of very small fruit. This is a natural process that gets rid of any excess fruit that has set so the tree retains only enough fruit to bring to maturity.

Pest of the month - ants
Ants are a regular summer nuisance on patios and in the kitchen where they search out a good supply of food for the growing nest. Once they are spotted they need immediate attention if they are to be controlled effectively. While ordinary contact powder insecticides will kill the worker ants they touch, they can do little to control the whole nest or eliminate the pest problem. That's where the superior technology of Ant Stop! is so different. Sprayed onto floors, skirting and window and door frames the insecticide remains effective for up to 3 months forming a protective, residual barrier. When ants cross this barrier they pick up microcapsules of insecticide on their antennae and legs as they pass. When they return to the nest other ants pick up the microcapsules and are killed by contact and ingestion.

Used in cracks and crevices in and around the kitchen and home, Ant Stop! is the modern way to protect homes from ants, earwigs, cockroaches, silverfish and other crawling insects. There is minimal odour, no staining of surfaces and children and pets need not be excluded from treated areas once the spray has dried.
